Natural Language Understanding in a Semantic Web Context

Abstract

The chapter looks into pattern-based approaches to relation extraction in text, with an underlying purpose of knowledge base expansion. As pattern-based approaches require explicit mentions of relations in text, the chapter discusses the interdependency between relations and text types. The chapter revisits regular expressions as possible implementations of lexical and lexico-syntactic pattern searches. The chapter also presents a semi-automatic bootstrapping approach to knowledge acquisition. Experiment: Using lexical and lexico-syntactic patterns to discover synonym instances using Wikipedia as a corpus.
