Abstract

We present a new method for the derivation of anthropogenic emission estimates for SO2. The method, which we term Enhancement Ratio Method (ERM), uses observed relationships between measured satellite tropospheric columnar levels of SO2 and NOx in each grid box at low wind speeds, and the DECSO v1 NOx emission estimates to scale the SO2 emissions. The method is applied over China at a 0.25° × 0.25° grid, and emission estimates for SO2 are derived for different seasons and years. The emission estimates thus derived appear to be consistent, both in their spatial distribution and their magnitude, and correlate very well with existing inventories.
