Overview

Mental health stigma has received more attention in recent years as a critical factor that shapes self and societal perceptions of mental health disorders and affects the processes of successful treatment initiation and continuation. A growing body of research examines mental health stigma among adolescents; however, there are several questions regarding how young people view mental health disorders, how these attitudes affect their health-care decision making, and how this stigma may differ by subgroup of youth based on culture, disorder type, and context. Research directions to assess how stigma is formed among adolescents, the origins of their viewpoints including the role of peer, family, and other social influences, and ideal methods of stigma measurement over the course of adolescence are discussed.
