Overview

There are few issues that are more important to understanding adolescents’ well-being than what goes on in their families. This essay discusses how parental involvement relates to adolescents’ functioning, with a focus on developmental patterns of parental involvement, mothers’ versus fathers’ involvement, the effects of parental involvement, and an understanding of parental involvement in different family constellations. But first, parental involvement is defined.

Definitions of Involvement

Parental involvement has been defined in many ways, but the most consistent definition of parental involvement includes three aspects (Day and Lamb 2004; Pleck 2010). First, direct interaction(also known as engagement) includes activities where the parent is fully involved with the child. Examples include singing a song to an alert infant, reading to a toddler, playing catch with a preschooler, playing a board game with a grade-school child, or discussing activities with an adolescent....
