Abstract

Human herpesvirus (HHV) 6A, HHV-6B, HHV-7, and HHV-8 (also known as Kaposi’s sarcoma associated herpesvirus, or KSHV) are the most recently discovered HHVs. HHV-6B reactivation occurs frequently after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT), and it is the most common cause of encephalitis in this population. HHV-6B has also been implicated in numerous other disease processes and mortality after HCT, but it is unclear whether its relationship with these outcomes is causal. Complications attributed to HHV-6A and HHV-7 are infrequent, and KSHV is a rare cause of Kaposi’s sarcoma after HCT. The overall clinical impact of reactivation or infection with these viruses requires additional study to determine optimal testing and treatment strategies. Multicenter randomized controlled treatment and prevention trials are needed to explore a causal link between reactivation of these viruses and adverse outcomes in HCT recipients.
