Definition
Mucus retention cyst is an accumulation of mucus in the major or minor salivary glands. Mucus accumulates within a dilated duct or acini with a preserved thin layer of epithelium and a connective tissue wall. The pathogenesis is partial or complete obstruction of the draining ducts such as from sialolithiasis, abnormally viscid mucus, periductal scars, inflammation, or tumors. Frequent mouth washing with hydrogen peroxide, deodorant mouthwashes, or antiplaque solutions can be highly irritating, and has been suggested to play a role in ductal narrowing. Tartar-control toothpastes may also be a possible cause of irritation (Baurmash 2003). Some retention cysts may be “true developmental” cysts. Thus, weakness in the duct, acquired or developmental, appears to play a role in its pathogenesis.
