The Business of Geriatrics

Abstract

In this chapter, the author looks at the supposed bygone era of house calls. In comparing the stressful circumstances of an office visit, he shares the inherent value in house calls to frail older adults. Enhanced opportunities to review medications and speak to family members are identified. The author discusses the role of the American Academy of Home Care Physicians and the Independence at Home Act in creating opportunities for geriatric practices to flourish in this environment. He also discusses the importance of scaling a home visit program to make it a viable business model. Finally, the author makes the overall business case for a house call program as part of a larger geriatrics practice.
