Abstract

There are many different types of spinal schwannomas including single and multiple (associated or not to neurofibromatosis), cystic, hemorrhagic, melanotic, and malignant. Their location is usually intradural and extramedullary, but some can be found intramedullary, extradural, intra-/extradural, and even intraosseous.

Considering cervical schwannomas, they are most often strictly intradural, but may also be totally or partially extradural (dumbbell tumors) either intraspinal or foraminal or extraspinal. These dumbbell forms are as frequent as 18 % when considering the whole spine, but at the cervical level, they account for 50 % of all schwannomas.
