Vize, Vladimir Yulyevich (1886–1954) – Soviet oceanologist, explorer of the Arctic, and correspondent member of the USSR Academy of Science (1933). His ancestors were the descendants from Sweden. In 1910, he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Göttingen in Germany. In 1912–1914, V. participated in G. Ya. Sedov’s expedition to the North Pole on board of the ship St. Foka. In 1918, V. started to work at the Main Physical Observatory, where he practiced oceanology and meteorology and processed the data gathered during the expedition of G. Ya. Sedov. In 1921–1923, V. commanded the oceanographic squadron during the expedition on board the hydrographic ship Taimyr. The expedition worked mainly in the Kara Sea. In 1922, he accepted an offer of employment from the Hydrometeorological Centre of Russia, but continued to work at the Russian State Hydrological Institute (RSHI) and the Main Physical Observatory.
