Berezhnykh, Ilya Avtonomovich (1799–1839) – staff captain of the Corps of Fleet Navigators. B. graduated from the Baltic Navigation School. He sailed on board the ships of the Baltic Fleet up to 1819. In 1820–1824, B. served as the assistant navigator during the reconnaissance exploratory surveys of the coasts of Siberia and the New Siberian Islands under the command of P.F. Anjou. He made the first survey of the southern and eastern coasts of Kotelny Island, the biggest island in the New Siberian Archipelago. In 1825–1827, B. was serving as the 14th rank assistant navigator and commanded the squadron, leading the reconnaissance exploratory survey of the coastline between the Pechora River and the Kanin Nos Cape. In 1827, B. got enrolled at the Corps of Fleet Navigators and was promoted to a sub-lieutenant. In 1828–1835, he sailed in the Mediterranean and the Baltic Seas. In 1831, B. became lieutenant.
