Norway, the Kingdom of Norway (Kongeriket Norge) – is a country in Northern Europe, in the northwest of the Scandinavian Peninsula (40 % of its territory). It has an area of 387 thousand km2 (the one of the mainland – approx. 324 thousand km2). The territory of N. also includes the Arctic Archipelago of Spitsbergen (Norwegian name Svalbard) and Jan Mayen Island. In the Southern Hemisphere the Antarctic Peter I Island and Queen Maud Land, and the sub-Antarctic Bouvet Island are “dependent territories” and thus not considered part of the Kingdom. The population of N. is 5.260 million people (2017). The capital is Oslo. N. borders with Russia, Finland, and Sweden in the east. It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and by the Barents Sea – in the north. Its shore is dissected by fjords; the coastline has a length of over 21 thousand km (including the fjords).
