Abstract

The psychiatric condition of schizophrenia has been recognized in Western medicine for some time. While much is known about its clinical presentation and strides have been made in treatment, there are still uncertainties regarding the factors that influence or cause its manifestation. Even less is understood about the appearance of schizophrenia in children and adolescents. This chapter examines these elements in the context of the African American experience, focusing on youth. The published peer-reviewed literature to date provided the basis for the information presented. With regards to Childhood Onset Schizophrenia (COS) and Early Onset Schizophrenia (EOS) in the African American population, there is currently no specific data available. This chapter highlights the existing evidence to construct a framework for future comprehensive consideration of this subject.
