Abstract

The genus of Satureja consists of aromatic plants with traditional usage in treatment of nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, blood pressure, appetizing, cough, vomiting, toothache and externally for relieving rheumatoid pain and inflammation, scabies and itching along with emmenagogue and diuretic effects of the savory flowers. Recent studies focused on isolation and purification of diverse secondary metabolites of this genus resulting mainly in identification of phenolic acid like rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid followed by flavonoids, triterpenoids (such as OA and UA), sesquiterpenes and iridoids. A number of studies evaluated essential oil composition of Satureja species indicating monoterpens with p-menthane structure like carvacrol, thymol and p-cymene.
