Abstract
The word Antarctica invokes many responses. In some people it brings to mind protection and conservation, some people are inspired to write plays, novels and symphonies, to paint or take pictures, and many think of the early scientists and adventurers who risked their lives exploring new territory. Antarctic exploration has a very complex history with many components: political, social, economic, scientific and relating to tourism. The following pages cover some of the less widely known historical aspects of expeditions to the frozen land.
