Abstract
Optimum health in aging adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) requires a healthcare workforce familiar with general principles of geriatric medicine integrated with specific knowledge about what diseases commonly occur in this population and how they manifest. Aging adults with IDD are at risk for undiagnosed disease, excessive pharmacotherapy, and inadequate preventive health care based on underestimation of life expectancy. This chapter provides a clinical framework for optimizing the health care of aging adults with IDD.
