Abstract
Steroid treatment is indispensable and sometimes life-saving in children with some common and uncommon kidney diseases. Higher doses are used than in adult patients, which lead to marked short-term side effects and in many cases quite severe long-term side effects. The aim is always to use as few steroids as possible, with the goal of weaning this treatment as soon as other immunosuppressive drugs start to be effective.
Steroids are used for several indications in pediatric nephrology. The most important are inflammatory kidney diseases, either glomerulonephritis or a vasculitic disease, and idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. They are also used in children receiving a kidney transplant, which is, however, outside of the scope of this book.
