Abstract

This book is dedicated to the study of leadership and its role in the success of an academic surgeon’s career. This first chapter is divided into two portions. First, leadership is discussed in general, including the definition, general aspects, and its relationship to other attributes and to the individual, including what leaders do and how they do it. Second, the importance of leadership and the role that it plays today in medicine and surgery is reviewed.
