The Republic of Benin is a French-speaking country that borders Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Niger (Fig. 1). It has an area of 112,760 km2 (43,536 mi2) and an estimated population of 12.1 million (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation 2020). It is one of the least developed countries in the world, ranking 127th (out of 203 countries) for GDP and 125th (out of 192) for Gross National Income (World Bank 2020).
