Abstract
Three types of alimentary tract atresia were studied: oesophageal (n= 360), small gut (n=253), and anal (n=457) atresia or stenosis. No association with maternal age was seen but there was a higher risk at parity 1 than at higher parities. Maternal overweight or obesity increased the risk for all three types of atresia while a period of unwanted childlessness increased the risk for small gut atresia while previous miscarriage was associated with an increased risk for oesophageal but not for small gut atresia. Maternal use of systemic glucocorticosteroids increased the risk for any atresia and use of thyroxine may result in an increased risk of anal atresia.
