Das maligne Melanom ist der häufigste Hauttumor. Die immer noch jährlich um etwa 7 % steigende Inzidenz und eine Mortalitätsrate von 20–25 % haben diesen Tumor in den Mittelpunkt aller therapeutischen Bemühungen in der Dermato-Onkologie gestellt. In Deutschland ist von einer Erkrankungsrate von 11 je 100 000 Einwohner pro Jahr auszugehen. Das entspricht damit auch der Inzidenz von 0,012 % in Österreich.
