Summary

The first of the two «new sciences» proposed by Galileo in 1638 is the study of strength of materials. This set of constitutive relations completed by the fundamental laws of statics constitutes the hard core of building science. This new science is proposed by Galileo in reaction to the confidence his predecessors had in the properties of scale models. Galileo shows that if stability properties are preserved, strength of materials properties are not.
