Abstract

Who is not familiar with Raphael’s School of Athens? (Figs. 1–2) It is a mural adorning a room of the papal palace on the Vatican Hill in Rome. Ever since it was painted almost half a millennium ago it has belonged to the collective philosophical and scientific consciousness of the Western world. Pope Julius II (1503–1513) commissioned the fresco from the 25-year-old Raphael in 1508. The date 1511 is recorded in one of the window embrasures as the date of completion.
