Abstract
If there was a point on which all participants of the workshop could certainly agree it was the notion that the term soil monitoring embraces a broad spectrum of definitions, motivations, operations, approaches and concepts in applied environmental protection as well as basic soil research. It became clear that there are two main interests in soil monitoring (Fig. 1). One may be labelled as the search for concepts, the other as the operational realization of soil monitoring.
