Abstract
A limiting factor for the assessment of antiviral substances such as antiviral factors from higher plants (8,11), antimetabolites (7) and chemicals on a large scale is the amount of virus host plants required for the bioassays. A possibility to develop an in vitro system for first screening steps opened with the isolation of protoplasts from a continuous culture of soybean cells and their successful infection with TMV (5), provided virus synthesis would proceed at a rate comRefsble to that achieved by highly viable protoplasts isolated from Tobacco leaves.
