Abstract

Siegmund (1956), although a general pathologist, made constant efforts to view the phenomena occurring in the periodontium in the context of processes known and described in general pathology. He considered that the phenomena which are the subject of periodontology, whatever their anatomo-clinical names, were fundamentally dependent on vascular functional disturbances. Irritations at the periphery of the periodontium, or those transmitted deeply through the medium of the tooth, would lead to ischaemia or hyperaemia, depending on the situation, and give rise to possibilities for dystrophic or inflammatory lesions.
