Abstract

The chapter discusses the importance of Theory of Mind (ToM) in childhood and the need for interventions to promote this skill. The author describes the concept of social cognition and its neurobiological substrate and then delves into the concept of ToM, as the ability to understand and attribute mental states to oneself and others, being essential for social interaction. It presents different models that describe the components of ToM and highlights the recognition of emotions, understanding of the actions of others, and attribution of beliefs and thoughts. In a specific topic about ToM interventions, it provides tips and evidence about different strategies that can collaborate in stimulating this skill, such as activities about conversation and the use of stories. In the context of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the chapter provides evidence about the use of different strategies, such as computer programs or cartoons for emotion recognition training or early intervention in shared attention, for example. The chapter highlights the importance of interventions targeting different aspects of ToM.
