Abstract

This chapter discusses the perceived ubiquity of porn, drawing on recent research from New Zealand and the United Kingdom. It then critically considers the intersection of age, gender, sexuality and pleasure. The widely held societal anxieties around children and sex are unpacked, and the origins of these fears are explored through a dual lens of the ‘children at risk’ discourse and more latent concerns around the sexualities of children. Following this, gender performativity and the influence of the nexus of neoliberalism and postfeminism are. The politics of porn within the New Zealand context is conceptualised before the research and the researcher are situated. This chapter closes with an outline of the author’s choices for the language, terminology and structure of the book.
