Abstract
Embarking on digital transformation is a key challenge facing many organizations. Especially smaller firms face great difficulty due to lack of financial resources, time, and culture. In this paper, we showcase how a professional association can be the key player to digitalize an industry made of small firms. By using semi-structured interviews and a large-scale survey, we outline how the digital transformation of the Belgian notary industry was steered by their professional association Fednot. Our findings indicate that Fednot has functioned as a proficient driver of digital transformation through a strong emphasis on customer-centricity, network organizational structures, and product ecosystems. Finally, we highlight the success factors, barriers to change, and recommendations for future professional association-led digital transformations.
