Abstract

Supply chain design and planning during product development (PD) are crucial for successful supply chain management. Despite its importance, there exists a significant gap in the literature regarding the structure required for making design and planning decisions during PD processes. This applies especially to circularity, which ultimately affects the sustainability, resiliency, and responsiveness of supply chains. To address this gap, we conduct a comprehensive literature review investigating the relationship between closed-loop supply chain design and planning (CLSC-DP) during PD, treatment policies, and supply chain paradigms including sustainability and resiliency. In total, we reviewed 203 research publications published in scientific journals and peer-reviewed conferences up until March 2023. Based on our analysis, we present a review of state-of-the-art papers aiming to establish a strong foundation of past research. We further provide an outlook for future research on the potential benefits of CLSC-DP during PD and, specifically, how this may impact the sustainability and resiliency of supply chains.
