Enlargement and the Future of Europe

Abstract

After 17 years of standing still on the European Union’s (EU) doorstep as one of the longest waiting and best prepared candidates for membership, in 2022 North Macedonia had to face yet another obstacle on its EU path by agreeing to the so-called French proposal in resolving its dispute with Bulgaria. By doing so North Macedonia’s government agreed on compromise for EU membership talks. This initial trade-off has yet to materialise as it is dependent upon major constitutional reform in North Macedonia to accommodate Bulgarian demands for including the Bulgarian minority within its constitution.
