Abstract
Visual fatigue occurs from different causes, and this problem is also related to personal, environmental, task, and device factors. Therefore, this research aimed to review the literature on visual fatigue in work environments with an emphasis on ergonomics, safety, and occupational health. The methodology consisted of searching for scientific articles in the Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, and PubMed databases using six combinations of keywords. Inclusion criteria considered complete articles from scientific journals in English, Spanish, and Portuguese published between 2011 and 2021. A total of 1385 references were found, of which 10 were chosen as suitable for inclusion in the research according to the selection criteria. The results indicate that chemical factors, the use of electronic devices, and staying in environments with poor lighting and ventilation are causes of visual fatigue. It is concluded that environmental, personal, task, and equipment factors influence visual fatigue, with the most identified in the studies being those related to the excess or overload of visual demand, the lack or low frequency of breaks during the workday, and the lack of measures application in occupational environments that reduce the occurrence of visual fatigue.
