Abstract

This essay is concerned with the issue of nationalism and intrastate diversities. One assumption of the discipline of international relations is that there is a close relation between the nation and the state. Consequently, the nation state compound has become a commonplace. In this sense, the discipline has often been loosely characterized as a study of the relation of nation states within an international system. This essay raises critical questions about the compound, particularly in the context of intrastate diversities.
