Gastrointestinal Eponymic Signs

Abstract

Signs of the oral cavity were first recognized and reported in the early nineteenth through the later twentieth century. These eponymously named physicians identified signs of a systemic disease process through the use of inspection in most and, in some situations, a light source and wooden spatula at their disposal to displace the tongue in order to better visualize abnormalities within the oral cavity. With improved recognition and prevention of exposure to toxicity from lead and copper, measles and mumps through vaccinations and antibiotics to treat infectious diseases (typhoid, syphilis, and group B streptococcus); these diseases and signs are less frequently seen today. Hence, symptoms, physical findings, and signs caused by these conditions may be unknown or poorly recognized. There is no information about these signs’ sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values in clinical practice. Nevertheless, they are essential to learning and further study as they provide clues to assist in diagnosis and aid in better understanding the pathophysiology of the disease.
