Abstract

The opening chapter reviews challenges of engaging university students in social justice and diversity education with an emphasis on resistance as thoughts, feelings, or attitudes that persons consciously or unconsciously use to delay or prevent development of critical awareness and social justice action. Discussion includes sources of resistance related to misunderstandings, emotion management, cognitive processes, and political and cultural opposition to critical race theory, feminist approaches, and studies regarding sexual and gender minorities.
