Abstract

The association between mental pathology and violent behavior has always been one of the elements of greatest interest by the scientific community. Several studies have addressed this issue with often controversial results. Of considerable interest in this regard is the rehabilitative treatment of these patients also from a forensic psychiatric perspective, when the aggressive act has resulted in the commission of a crime. In these terms, measuring the risk of aggressive behavior and longitudinal observation of changes in that risk becomes essential. The residential therapeutic and rehabilitative pathway in many cases assumes a key role. It should also have among its objectives the prevention of recidivism of crime in all those cases in which the connection between pathology and the commission of crime has been established. With this in mind, it will be essential to monitor the patient not only from the point of view of the risk of aggressive behavior per se but also from the point of view of changes in the overall clinical picture in relation to the rehabilitation course. Studies conducted in this regard, although very few at present, have suggested areas and modes of intervention that could be useful insights for defining specific pathways in this complex category of patients.
