Abstract

Soil degradation and contamination have now become a serious global issue for agricultural production. The huge application of pesticides and chemicals for more and more agricultural production deteriorates the soil quality for crop production. For the last few years, biochar has been identified as a promising tool for the remediation of contaminants from agricultural land. By the several kinds of research, many engineered or enriched nanocomposite-based biochar were produced to decontaminate the soil through different methodologies. These opted pathways for their physico-chemical modifications help in increasing their sorption capacity, enhancing the soil bacterial abundance, decreases the mobility of xenobiotics, and increasing their bioavailability in soil. Apart from this, they also impart an important role for carbon sequestration, soil fertility, decreased phytotoxicity, increased nutrient availability, higher biomass, decreased bioaccumulation of contaminants, and overall improved crop performance. This book chapter summarized the recent methods, types, mechanisms, and efficacy of engineered biochar-based nanocomposites in the sustainability of agriculture and environment.
