Abstract

Self-injury is a form of severe problem behavior that results in physical harm to the individual. Research has shown that individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders may be more likely to exhibit self-injury than others. In this chapter, updated from (Vollmer et al., Applied behavior analysis for children with Autism spectrum disorders. Springer, 2009), we will discuss the possible etiology of self-injury and environmental factors that contribute to its occurrence and maintenance. Additionally, we will provide an overview of functional assessments methods as well as guidelines for effective treatment. Special considerations for safely and ethically addressing self-injury will also be discussed.
