Abstract
This chapter focuses on sexuality and gender in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, and how practitioners can support the needs of the individuals they work with. Discussions pertaining to relationships and sexuality among people with intellectual disabilities have traditionally been difficult ones and there has, perhaps, been a tendency to veer away from them as they have often been contextualised by concerns regarding risk, safety, choice and abuse. Whilst such concerns also exist in respect of the general (particularly younger) population, they tend to persist throughout the adult lives of people with intellectual disabilities, arguably framing the discussion and pre-determining the outcomes.
