Stray Finds in the Periphery of Harbours: The Case of Paralimni- Louma, Famagusta Bay, Cyprus

Abstract

In 2017, a team from the University of Cyprus was invited by the Cypriot Department of Antiquities to conduct an underwater archaeological assessment at the location Paralimni Louma, Famagusta Bay, prior to the extension of a modern marina. An enigmatic assemblage of stray pottery finds was located outside the marina, with no direct association with anchorage activities. A geoarchaeological survey was deemed necessary to document possible palaeogeographic changes of the coastal topography, in order to exclude any possibility that a buried archaeological site might be at risk. According to the results, no significant coastal changes can be suggested, whereas it was clear that the seabed stratigraphy was disturbed. This led to the conclusion that the pottery assemblage at the entrance of the cove might be “seafaring debris” from the periphery zone of the Salamis harbour, moved to Louma by fishing activities, in antiquity or the recent past. Taking one step beyond the pronounced emphasis on trade in the archaeological discourse, this paper discusses the secondary contexts of stray underwater finds, as these found at Louma, and attempts an interpretative approach to the formation processes that have affected their life in the dynamic zone of shallow waters, from antiquity to the recent past. In this respect it is argued that fishing with nets, a maritime activity with a very long history in the Mediterranean waters, can act as a repetitive ‘scrambling’ process that reshuffles stray finds on the seabed.

Acknowledgments

The pre-construction survey at Paralimni Louma was conducted after an invitation by the Department of Antiquities, which has undertaken the responsibility to raise funds and cover all the necessary costs, as well as to provide all necessary conservation treatment for the finds. Our collaboration was excellent and we are grateful to all personnel involved, and particularly to Eleni Loizidou the head of the Conservation Laboratory, as well as to Constantina Hadjivassili who assisted with the finds treatment. Special thanks are owed to Constantinos Nicolaou, maritime archaeologist and officer of the Cyprus Port and Marine police, Andonis Neophytou, maritime archaeologist and computer scientist, and Christos Patsalides, chief diver of the project, for their valuable contribution to fieldwork logistics, recording and safety. We also thank the two archaeology students, Christiana Chrisdoulou and Andonis Michael, for their assistance and we are indebted to the excellent Cypriot divers that participated in the project: Costas Mardacoftas, Yiorkos Hadgittofis, Andreas Kritiotis, Andreas Kazamias and Yiannis Tsangaris. We are also grateful to the anonymous reviewers for their insightful comments and suggestions.
