Clinical Scales for Headache Disorders

Part of the book series: Headache ((HEAD))

Abstract

Headache is a neurological disorder with a high disabling potential and high prevalence. Headaches are estimated to affect nearly a billion cases worldwide. Migraines have a significant effect on patients’ quality of life, especially when attacks become frequent. To overcome this burden, the scientific society provided guidelines that could guide physicians in their approach to patients with headache in both diagnosis and treatment. Several studies have been conducted in the research field of acute and preventive therapy of headache and adherence to the guidelines represents a useful tool to guarantee the patient the best standard of care. However, compliance with the guidelines remains extremely low. This chapter provides a schematic methodology that helps physicians in the approach to the migraine patient by referring to the most recent guidelines describing the characteristics of the patients and the different therapeutic possibilities. Finally, readers will be provided with guidance to help improve the quality of migraine clinical trials and to inform clinical practice.
