Abstract
For a long time the importance of emotions was disregarded. The current “emotional turn” demonstrates the function of emotions, both for the development of individual identity and for social coexistence. The notion of a humane global society demands, in addition to the securing of material, technical and financial resources, the capacity for empathy and compassion. Furthermore, it calls for a holistic view of the individual to be acknowledged with dignity. Emotional education, which should aim to empower individuals to act ethically, is a profoundly moral and ethical challenge which can only succeed through the interaction of thinking and feeling.
