Abstract

This chapter outlines the research design and details the ambitious quantitative and qualitative methodology that I use to test the model of democratic frustration. It first maps the concept of democratic frustration and its three dimensions: ideological, institutional, and political, in relation to other democratic pathologies. I then detail the different components of the research design, including survey (with both close-ended and open-ended items), a panel study survey component, an experiment, in-depth individual interviews, and an element of qualitative media analysis. The quantitative component itself makes use of entirely new measures which I piloted and validated in this study. I also discuss the case selection and present the rationale of combining comparative analysis alongside the use of single case studies as spotlights to illustrate specific examples of the research design.
