SDGs in the European Region

Abstract

The reasons for tourism in the world vary. Not all tourists come to recreation areas for leisure or nature or cultural tourism – there is also the field of health and medical tourism. Accessible medical service provided via specific tourism branch correspond to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (“Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”). The Kaliningrad region has a big potential for rehabilitation and health tourism, and has been – since the beginning of Soviet period and even before – considered as a resort with relevant amenities. The Kaliningrad region – due to its coastal climate, natural resources, and smooth air temperatures, including in summer season – has long been considered as a place of health recovery after suffering from lung diseases and cardiovascular diseases for people of all ages. The COVID-19 virus is a disease that has negative consequences for the respiratory system and the cardiovascular system, and the need for rehabilitation for such patients has increased significantly over the past 2 years. In this regard, the relevance of the Kaliningrad region as a place for rehabilitation has increased manifold, especially in the context of the closure of borders associated with travel restrictions to European resorts such as those in the Czech Republic, Lithuania, etc. The result of research shows that tourism flows into the Kaliningrad region has been rising between 2019 and 2021, when the COVID-19 (travel) restrictions and limitations started, while requests for services rendered by sanatoria and rehabilitation centers in the Kaliningrad region also rose as a consequence of the COVID-19. The authors determine in the chapter the Russian regions from which most of tourists for rehabilitation purposes are coming to the Kaliningrad region, and offer recommendations on the integrated and sustainable use of the region’s potential for the rehabilitation of patients after suffering from COVID-19.
