Abstract
Technological advances have always played an influential role in child development and parenting. The past 20 years have witnessed rapid acceleration in the use of devices with connectivity and greater access to such innovations among younger children. While computers, phones, tablets, and other digital resources may confer great benefits to children, they also present significant risks and challenges. Parents who are mindful and intentional about the use of technology may be able to mitigate the risks and enhance the benefits of technology. Awareness of the developmental needs of children and adolescents, coupled with effective parenting strategies and boundaries may support enhanced relationships within the family and promote positive uses of technology, and minimize the potential harms associated with excessive screen time. Cultural considerations are taken into account and specific recommendations are provided.
