Abstract
Mandatory, large-scale industrial fortification of commonly consumed foods with iron can be an effective intervention to help address iron deficiency, when delivered as an integrated part of national nutrition plans. It complements other evidence-based nutrition interventions and can be sustainably delivered by local food systems. There are several policy considerations which need to be addressed by policymakers to design, implement, improve, and monitor iron fortification programming. This chapter summarizes these considerations and reviews the guidance that support the coordination, risk management, and overall delivery of food fortification with iron as an effective public health tool.
