Art and Drawing in Radiology Education

Abstract

In this chapter, three potential roles of art in radiology education are presented: (1) structured viewing of art (using a specific framework: Visual Thinking Strategies, or VTS) to develop robust, logical approaches to interpretation of visual information and visual reasoning; (2) use of art, both observational and participatory, as a remedy for burn-out; (3) active drawing techniques for interactive and learner-centered teaching. The history and technique of VTS are presented, with example of its role in various medical training programs. Evidence is presented for the virtues of art appreciation, and art creation as a way to prevent burn-out and enhance resilience. Examples of real-time drawing methods for teaching are given, with technical details and information on how this can be successful in many different educational settings, from small groups to large auditorium presentations.
