Abstract

Giddens observes that the everyday experience of security can be traced back to ‘certain characteristic experiences of childhood (Giddens, 1993: 92), related to the feeling of ‘basic trust’: ‘trust implies not only that one has learned to rely on the fairness, equality, and continuity of external agents, but that one’ ‘can rely on oneself’ (ibidem: 94).

Notes

  1. 1.

Laura Tavares points out that neoliberalism is not limited to: “economic measures with temporary and/or transitory effects [but brings] serious and permanent social consequences, often difficult to reverse” (Tavares, 1999:171).

  2. 2.

At this point we are only talking about some western societies of advanced capitalist development, as in certain European and some Latin American countries. It can by no means be applied in a general way and is not intended to be so. Undoubtedly, the place of adults in Asian societies or among indigenous peoples in Mexico has other features and other traditional characteristics in terms of respect, admiration and appreciation (Klein, 2015).

  3. 3.

But, to tell the truth, it is nothing more than a deepening of elements that were already present in the traditional relations of the subject vis-à-vis the Institutions and the State since the very constitution of modern society (Klein, 2002).

  4. 4.

This “forgetfulness” is significant. Oedipus’ grandfather, Labdacos, is actually responsible for the curse that hangs over his son and grandson, by disregarding the rituals concerning the god Dionysus. Labdacos was also lame, like the other great founder of a lineage: Jacob, only in this case the hamartia (“tragic mistake”, in greek) is transformed into brachah (“blessing”, in hebrew). (Genesis 32, 24–31).
