Abstract
The following chapter describes energy security for the case of Europe with a description of its energy mix and data regarding both production and consumption for each fuel type and application sector. Reference is made to the recent EU vision to become a neutral continent from gaseous emissions by 2050, which is expected to bring about major changes in EU member states’ policies. The necessary energy transition required for this purpose needs to be closely monitored and re-evaluated at regular intervals, especially in the wake of the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine and the EU’s heavy reliance on natural gas to meet most of its needs. The competition for gas supply through pipelines against the liquefied natural gas market is expected to be particularly fierce and needs to be studied in order to adopt the appropriate EU policies that will enhance its energy security.
