Abstract

In the fall and early winter of 1926, shortly after the founding of the Prague Linguistic Circle, an exchange of correspondence took place between the two leading Russian members of the circle, Roman Jakobson and Nikolaj Trubetzkoy. In a “long, worried” letter from October of that year Jakobson asked his compatriot in Vienna to react to the idea that linguistic changes are systematic and goal-oriented, and that the evolution of language is marked by the same purposiveness that characterizes all social and cultural systems. Trubetzkoy’s answer, dated December 22, contains the following significant passage (Jakobson and Pomorska 1983:64–5):
