Abstract

Cars have transformed the world in the way people individually get from point A to point B. As an urban mobility offer, they still dominate and shape citizens’ everyday life. But the demands for restrictions on motorized individual mobility are getting louder to effectively reduce air pollution, noise, accidents, traffic jams and space occupancy. Overpopulated cities need novel, safe, sustainable, compact, and effective solutions for individual mobility. Micro-vehicles are very adaptable to different usage scenarios. The scientific project AuRa (Autonomes Rad, engl. autonomous bicycle), carried out at the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg, proposes a novel use case in which an electrified three-wheeled cargo bike will become an on-demand, shared autonomous vehicle for the city. Designing such an innovation opens numerous opportunities, but also complex challenges. The future acceptance and success of novel concepts depends on user satisfaction. Placing the user in the center of the design process can make the mobility concept easier to shape. Therefore, the use case of the system must be empirically examined from the user’s perspective. To address the research gap, a mixed methods UX approach was developed and described in the present work in progress. Firstly, the existing use case concept is introduced, and a review of related works is presented. Secondly, the methods for investigating the users’ needs: a quantitative study (questionnaire) and qualitative study (focus groups) are described. Finally, first results of the UX approach and interpretations are discussed. The conducted research makes an important contribution to the design planning of the AuRa-concept.
